The increasingly global nature of business today means that technical, scientific, and business professionals are faced with having to be more interculturally skilled and proactive in a work culture than does not comply to universal rules. RWTH Alumni-Team offers a special workshop on intercultural communication for internationally-active managers, project leaders of international teams, engineers, scientists among the RWTH-Alumni.

The 2-day practice- and applications-oriented workshop addresses those culture-based communication challenges and problems faced in particular by technical and business professionals. Through an understanding of how different frameworks of cultural rationale and expectations work, participants learn how to systematically structure that conceptual knowledge into the concrete steps that lead to informed action by 1) "mapping out" likely culture-based conflict interfaces, in order to 2) make a critical "paradigm shift" in devising new strategies in key work scenarios, such as solving problems, conducting meetings, managing and negotiating conflict, requesting information, optimising multicultural teams, and providing motivational leadership.

Beschreibung: Aus der Workshop-Beschreibung

The relevance of intercultural communication awareness and skills training for scientists is underscored by a common assumption among scientists, that science is objective and neutral, and that scientific facts speak for themselves. This may be true, but how scientists exchange information, discuss and defend their positions, work in teams, provide supervision, etc., is loaded with often very different cultural assumptions and expectations.

The 2-day introductory workshop to intercultural communication is designed to offer graduate students the opportunity to develop the necessary knowledge base and skills in their functions as team members or leaders in a highly multicultural work environment. Drawing on real-life case studies and scenarios that illustrate the most prototypical cross-cultural communication problems, this workshop provides participants with insight into how basic differences in cultural values assumptions directly impact the manner in which technical and scientific professionals meet, talk about their business, work in groups to evaluate and solve problems, make decisions, and provide supervision and motivational leadership. In particular, the workshop approaches these scenarios from both perspectives of the team member and team leader, ultimately drawing together the necessary tools required for effective multicultural team-building and leadership skills. Whether participants are presently in leadership positions or are simply often called upon to exercise leadership abilities, sensitivity and skill in handling the cultural context of teamwork is a key component to harnessing and synergising the multicultural work potential.

The applications-oriented nature of this workshop guides learners to create a systematic assessment of the "cultural logic" (inherent cultural values, assumptions, and expectations), and the inherent risks and potentials that underlie different communication models that shape native tools and work cultures. This approach enables a critical "paradigm shift" in locating critical conflict interfaces and devising new strategies in key communication scenarios such as conducting meetings, negotiating deadlines, managing cross-cultural conflicts, requesting and providing information, optimising multicultural teams, providing motivational leadership, assessing and responding to tricky emails.

Another important aspect of intercultural communication is the role of language. How do the conflict interfaces explored manifest themselves on the lingual level when, for example, "German-English" dialogues with native "English-English" or "Japanese-English", each of which reflects in tone and structure the values logic of the speaker's native tongue. What are, for example, the characteristics of "German-English" that frequently lead to typical misunderstandings between German professors and international students when communicating critical feedback, issuing instructions, or expressing requests? Participants will learn to use the potential inherent in native "English-English" to create the psychological space required to effectively negotiating conflict. Participants will also learn how to make the "paradigm shift" for more effective communication on the language level, and how to maximise the inherent potential of English as a mediatory tool.
